Leggere, o meglio letteralmente divorare, la trilogia di J.Todd Scott un libro dopo l’altro, senza la pausa “naturale” tra le pubblicazioni è assolutamente soddisfacente ma allo stesso tempo un’esperienza inquietante: una doppia spirale di bene e male, un crescendo di violenze, abusi, droghe, bilanciato dal forte senso di giustizia che si abbatterà sui soprusi, una confortevole e rassicurante percezione che forse andrà tutto bene…alla fine.
This Side of Night, il terzo e ultimo libro della trilogia iniziata con “The Far Empty”, seguito da “High White Sun”, inizia con una sequenza di pagine feroci. Siamo a Ojinaga, in Messico, dove degli studenti vengono violentemente rapiti e uccisi dai membri del cartello “Nemesio” il cui capo, alias Fox Uno, scompare dall’altra parte del confine portando tutta l’azione nella contea di Big Bend governata dallo sceriffo Cherry.
Entrambi i lati del confine sono permeati da crimini e violenza e lo sceriffo Cherry ha i giorni contati per rendere la sua città quella sicura oasi che sognava: una nuova elezione è dietro l’angolo e questo affare del cartello “Nemesio” si sta rivoltando contro di lui. Cherry e i suoi vice America Reynosa e Danny Ford si ritrovano coinvolti nella guerra personale di Fox Uno, un tornado di barbarie che avvolge la vita, la famiglia e gli amici dei tre poliziotti. Per ovvie ragioni non posso dire senza il rischio “spoil” perché lo sceriffo Chris decide di andare contro la legge, la sua stessa legge, e nascondere Fox Uno nello stesso posto in cui è stato ferito alcuni anni prima, quel luogo dove è costruita la sua casa, la sua famiglia.
Il libro è una resa dei conti con connotazioni cinematografiche che ricorda film tratti da libri come “Non è un paese per vecchi”. L’ultima parte dell’azione è descritta in una sequenza al rallentatore di eventi trafitti da proiettili vaganti, un’attesa al cardiopalma seguita da accecanti lampi di luce. Scott è il bravo regista, il tecnico del suono che fa magie (provate a contraddirmi: quante volte avete sentito suoni reali solo suggeriti ma non descritti leggendo un libro?) e il sublime direttore della fotografia. Il lettore è integralmente circondato dal potere della lettura, vive di persona ogni secondo, sente ogni ferita, la paura, le preoccupazioni e alla fine tira quel sospiro di sollievo desiderato ma non aspettato.
This Side one Night, nonostante la sua trama fittizia, si basa su fatti realmente accaduti nel 2014 quando un sospetto membro di una banda ha confessato di aver ucciso più di 40 studenti scomparsi da sei settimane. J. Todd Scott è un agente federale della DEA (da più di 20 anni, secondo la sua biografia). Con questa esperienza dona ai suoi libri un’autentica immediatezza e una trama solida e credibile che cattura il lettore fin dalla prima pagina. Nonostante la brutalità in tutta la trilogia e la violenza nei libri, nulla è gratuito. Reading, or better binge-reading, the J.Todd Scott’s trilogy a book after the other, without the “natural” pause among the publications is an utterly satisfying but a truly uncanny one: a two branch spiral of good and evil, a crescendo of violence, abuses, drugs, balanced by a strong sense of incoming justice, a comfortable and reassuring perception that perhaps all will be fine…at the very end.
This Side of Night, the third and the last book of the trilogy started with “The Far Empty”, followed by “High White Sun”, begins fiercely. We’re in Ojinaga, Mexico, where students are violently killed and kidnapped by members of the “Nemesio” cartel whose boss, aka Fox Uno, disappears on the other side of the border bringing all the action in Sheriff Cherry’s Big Bend County.
Both side of the border are permeated by crimes and violence and Sheriff Cherry is running out of time for making his city the safe one he dreamed for: a new sheriff election is coming and this “Nemesio” cartel affair is twisting against him. Cherry and his deputies America Reynosa and Danny Ford find themselves caught in Fox Uno’s personal war, an escalating tornado of barbarity wrapping the life, family and acquaintances of the three of them. For evident reasons I can’t say without spoil all the book why sheriff Chris decide to go against the law, his own law, and hide Fox Uno in the very same place he was wounded some years before, that place which his house is built.
The book is a cinematic showdown recalling book-based movies as “No Country for Old Men”. The last part of the action is described in a slow-motion sequence of events pierced by stray bullets, heart-pounding waiting followed by blinding flashes of light. Scott is the good director, the magician sound engineer (Try to contradict me: how many times you ear the actual sounds only suggested but not described reading a book?) and the sublime photography director. The reader is integrally encircled by the power of the reading, actually witnessing every second, feeling every wound, the fear, the worries and eventually breathe that desired but not expected sigh of relief.
This Side one Night, notwithstanding his fiction plot, is based on true facts happened in 2014 when a suspected gang member has confessed to killing more than 40 students missing for six weeks. J. Todd Scott is a federal agent with DEA (for more than 20 years, according to his biography). With this experience he gives his books an authentic immediacy and a solid and believable plot that captures the reader from the very first page. Despite the brutality throughout the trilogy and the violence through the books, nothing is gratuitous. You feel the charm of a dark and fierce poetry, something making you squeeze the pages between your fingers at the thought that all is possibly real but in the safety of actual fiction.
